1. Take Comfort In Our Experienced, Caring Staff.

From the time you are greeted in our reception area, you’ll realize that A Perfect Smile is not like other dental offices. We understand that dental anxiety is not just something you can “get over,” and we hope that our expertise and our friendly faces will be just the first steps in making you feel welcome and comfortable.

In addition to his gentle and calming demeanor, Dr. Nelson is known for his extensive training and experience in restorative and cosmetic dentistry, as well as — perhaps most importantly — overall oral wellness. He’s committed to a “patient-first” philosophy, long-lasting results, and staying abreast of the latest dental techniques and technology.

He’s also a believer in “no-guilt dentistry,” so you can rest assured that when you come in, we won’t lecture you about infrequent visits or your dental hygiene habits. We are just happy to have you in our office and work with you toward better overall health.

Dr. Nelson has also built up a team of some of the top dental professionals in the area of Portland, ME. Whether you are getting assistance with scheduling from our talented patient coordinator or you are receiving a cleaning from one of our highly-skilled hygienists, you’ll feel confident that you are receiving excellent care.

2. Deep Breathing Practices Can Help Ease Tension.

When he’s not in the office, Dr. Nelson enjoys bettering himself through the practice of yoga. And he brings some of the skills from the yoga studio into the office! This includes deep breathing exercises that can help you feel relaxed before and during a routine cleaning or more involved dental procedure.

Diaphragmatic breathing has been shown to be an effective strategy for relieving dental anxiety, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Here’s how to do it.

  • Sitting up straight with your head held upright, rest one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen.
  • Exhale completely, until your lungs feel empty.
  • Then, begin to inhale slowly and evenly. Count while you’re doing this to ensure a measured breath.
  • When your lungs feel full, begin to exhale. Again, count while you’re breathing as to ensure an even and controlled exhalation. Try to exhale for longer than you inhale.
  • Repeat.

You can also pair this breathing exercise with muscle relaxation. To do this, tense a specific set of muscles when you inhale and relax them when you exhale. With some practice, you’ll be able to discreetly do these deep breathing exercises as you wait for your appointment and even while you’re in the dental chair!

3. Enjoy Our Comfort Amenities.

No, you didn’t stumble into a spa by mistake! Our warm and inviting office was designed to help you feel at ease. In addition to the calming atmosphere, we’re happy to provide a variety of comfort amenities to help you further ease your tension.

Here are some of the comfort amenities we can provide:
