Smile Story: Kristy

meSpring is officially here in Maine! The flowers are in bloom, plants and trees are looking green and happy, and we can’t help but enjoy every last minute outside.

This week, we spent time with Kristy, A Perfect Smile’s Patient Coordinator, to learn more about her love of nature and her plans to hike a different mountain each week this season.

Hi Kristy, can you tell us a bit about yourself: who you are, where you’re from, and what you do?

I was born and raised in southern Maine. Here at A Perfect Smile, I am training to become the new treatment coordinator. In my personal life, I love hiking, reading, and spending time with my fiancé and our families.

When did you first become interested in wellness?

My interest in wellness began in at young age; I decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology because I wanted to help people. My junior and senior years of high school I was dually enrolled in YCCC, I completed my bachelors at the age of 20, with a goal of helping others be healthy and happy.

Who are your biggest professional/life inspirations?

I take a lot of my daily life inspirations from my favorite modern poet Mary Oliver, who said “tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and crazy life?” I strive to live my life to fullest, love grandly, and help others always professionally and personally.

What are your favorite spots in your neighborhood (Falmouth or around town)?

My fiancé and I love going to the old port, we love the old buildings and are getting married at Bully Feeney’s next spring. We also love to hike the trails in Yarmouth, on Cousins Island, and Little John Island. We plan to hike a different mountain every weekend this summer.

What music do you currently have on rotation at home or while you work?

Music is a big part of my life, lately I am listening to a lot of 90s Hip-Hop, but I will always be a punk girl at heart.

This weekend is Earth Day, so our challenge is to do something to give back to our community. Maine is one of the most beautiful places on the planet – let’s all do our part to keep it that way.

Ideas: Pick up litter in your neighborhood, plant a tree or community garden, or volunteer with your favorite local non-profit like our neighbors at the Maine Audubon Society.

10 Reasons to Book an Invisalign Consultation

TFall in Love With Your SMilehis is the last week to schedule an invisible braces consultation at A Perfect Smile and take advantage of our “Fall in Love with Your Smile” Invisalign Special.

If you still haven’t made up your mind to get straighter, healthier teeth, here are our top 10 reasons to schedule an Invisalign consultation this week

Drumroll please…

#10: If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and longed for straighter teeth without the uncomfortable mouthful of metal braces…. you definitely need to book a consultation and check out Invisalign.

#9: If the idea of straighter teeth with invisible braces gets you super excited, then you better book a consultation! We’ll give you a hands on demo of the custom-made aligners made with Invisalign’s SmartTrack® material. They’re virtually invisible, so most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them.

#8: Anyone who has ever had traditional, metal braces will tell you that one of the biggest challenges is cleaning the food out from between your brackets and wires. Brushing your teeth is a pain, and flossing can be extremely tricky – not to mention the little cuts you can get on the inside of your mouth from the brackets. Invisalign has changed all that. The aligners are removable, so it’s easy to continue brushing and flossing your teeth the way you normally do. We recommend that you wear your aligners 20 to 22 hours a day for the best results, and take them out to eat, brush, and floss.

#7: “But how long will my treatment be?” – Dr. Nelson will cover that at your consultation.

#6: Invisalign can help correctly align teeth, and also alleviate the issues that can be caused by an improper bite, speech or chewing difficulties, jaw problems, and increased wear on the tooth enamel. Fun fact!

#5: Dr. Nelson will take precise 3D digital images of of your teeth and map out the treatment plan, including the exact movements of your teeth and how long your treatment will be. You’ll even get to see how your teeth will move and preview your new smile.

#4: When your Invisalign treatment is complete, you’ll get a custom made retainer so you can take care of your new smile for years to come.

#3: What about keeping your smile healthy during your Invisalign treatment? We’re including a FREE Oral B Electric Toothbrush ($120 value) with any Invisalign Consultation scheduled before March 31st, 2017.

#2: If you are tired of covering your mouth one you smile… you can start your Invisalign treatment right away and have straighter teeth by the new year.

Smile Story: Lisa

unnamedWe spoke with Lisa, one of our Certified Dental Assistants about her daily dental care routine, springtime in Maine, and her tips for keeping your smile healthy.

Hi Lisa, Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’ve worked with Dr. Nelson for more than a decade and have helped hundreds of patients design the smile of their dreams. I live in Windham, Maine with my family and spend as much time as I can with my two growing children.

When I’m not routing for my kids on the athletic field, I love to be outside as much as possible. My favorite hobbies are walking, gardening swimming & relaxing by the pool.

How did you choose a career as a dental assistant?

I first became aware of careers in the dental field from talking with a friend’s mom who was a dental assistant. She had always complimented my smile and my attitude and then one day, she suggested that I explore a career in the field. I started working with her at her office while studying at the Dental Careers Institute. Right away, I loved the fast paced environment of the dental practice. Working with new dental technology, talking with patients, and spending my time helping people seemed to come naturally to me. After graduating from DCI, I continued my studies and became a Certified Dental Assistant. I still love what I do today and am forever grateful to my friend’s mom for introducing me to dental assisting.

What is your daily dental care routine?

Morning: brush, rinse mouthwash

Afternoon:  brush , rinse with oxyfresh (I’m hooked on that stuff! Ask for a sample at your next visit)

Evening:  brush w/ Clinpro toothpaste (it has extra flouride), floss, and I wear my dental nightguard faithfully every night

What do you like most about living in Maine?

What’s not to love about living in Maine? I absolutely love having four seasons. The ever changing landscape gives us so much to do year round without having to travel far.

What do you like to do in the springtime?

I love the anticipation of spring – when I hear the sound of the peepers, I know its really here. I love maple syrup Sunday, it’s a Maine tradition. One year, my friends and I visited three different Maple sap houses in one afternoon! Delicious!

What do you think is the most important thing to remember about dental care in general?

For most people, the most important thing is keeping a regular schedule of preventative hygiene appointments, and practicing good home care. I used to love going to the dentist as a child and I believe starting kids early is the key to lifelong healthy smiles!

What’s coming up for you this year that you are excited about?

I’m getting very excited about the upcoming high school baseball season. My son, Tanner, plays for Windham High School. I’m also planning to sign up for some 5k’s this year. Last year, I participated in the Color Run and it was such a blast. I’m hoping it comes back and I can do it again!

Lisa has worked with Dr. Nelson to help hundreds of patients with restorative dentistry and smile design at A Perfect Smile. Contact us today or call 207-781-2448 to reserve an appointment.

Smile More Challenge 2017: Invite a Busy Friend to Relax

Invite a Busy Friend to take a BREAk and do something relaxing My LoveWe’re all looking for more reasons to smile. This year, we’re sharing simple challenges each week to help guide us into a practice of smiling more and bringing happiness to the world, whether towards ourselves, loved ones, the patient community at A Perfect Smile, or friends throughout Maine.

This week, invite a busy friend to take a break and do something relaxing and enjoyable. (Bonus: You get to join too, if you feel like it.)

Smile Story: Chelsea

chels APSChelsea is carving her own path and sharing her passion for dental hygiene education at A Perfect Smile and as a teacher at the University of New England. Read on to find out how she’s made a career out of following her passions:

Hi Chelsea, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I have a large family and grew up in a small town in Vermont. I grew up without electricity, by choice, so most of my childhood I spent playing basketball and other sports outside all year round. To say that I thought Portland was a big city when I first moved to Maine is an understatement. Portland has so much to offer! I have since bought my first home in Windham and am loving living in Maine.

What is most important to you in 2017?

I’m striving to be as healthy and happy as possible.

Can you tell us about your experience as a dental hygienist? How did you become interested in the field?

I became interested in dental hygiene in high school when I had the opportunity to do a co-op work experience in a dental office as a dental assistant. I was trained on the job and thus prepared myself for hygiene school. I went to the University of New England for an Associates and Bachelor’s degree. I then moved on to obtain my Master’s degree from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut.

I have been practicing dental hygiene for over 7 years and have my local anesthesia license. There is nothing I enjoy more than dental hygiene. I just started teaching at the University of New England last year and thoroughly enjoy that in addition to working clinical hygiene here at A Perfect Smile.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Maine?

I love the ocean, growing up in Vermont we always used to vacation to Maine, so it’s wonderful to truly live in “Vacationland”.

What are some other things you are currently interested in?

I love to stay active and play on many local sports teams in the community, including basketball and kickball. I recently bought a house, and love interior decorating and DIY projects.  I also love to sing and dance, but most of all, laugh and goof around with my friends and family.

What’s coming up for you this year that you are excited about?

My big sister is getting married this year and I have had a lot of fun planning and celebrating the multiple wedding events. I cannot wait for the ceremony in April!

A Perfect Smile Announces New Oral Sleep Appliances for Sleep Apnea Treatment

IMG_4556For years, if you were diagnosed with an obtrusive sleep disorder, you could choose between corrective surgeries and PAP devices designed to be worn when sleeping to keep your airway open. While these treatments are effective for managing sleep disorders, many patients find them scary, invasive, uncomfortable, and hard to travel with.

But there is a revolution in obtrusive sleep disorder treatment happening right now. With the latest technology and research, specially trained dentists are now offering Oral Sleep Appliances (OSAs) as a more comfortable treatment alternative. These OSAs help to reposition the patient’s lower jaw and tongue to maintain an airway while sleeping. This helps the patient to sleep through the night and reduce the risk of cardiac disease, heart attacks, and strokes commonly associated with obtrusive sleep disorders.

Dr. Nelson became interested in sleep disorders a decade ago when research on alternative treatments through oral devices was really taking off. Dr. Nelson started attending continuing education courses and eventually enrolled in a Dental Sleep residency program at Tufts University. In May, Dr. Nelson completed his residency with the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain and is one of the first dentists in Maine to be accredited to treat sleep disorders.

Now, with his specialized training, Dr. Nelson can help patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea, people who snore heavily, and people who struggle to breathe when lying on their backs. The specific therapy for sleep apnea is tailored to the individual patient based on medical history, physical examiniation and a collaborative approach with your primary care doctor and pulmonologist.

If you or a loved one suffer from sleep apnea or an obtrusive sleep disorder, call our office at 207-781-2448 today for a consultation.

A NEW SMILE CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

charlie studio

Charlie is a painter, printmaker and sculptor who has recently invested in himself and feels great about it. He says that he decided to invest in his smile because his teeth had started to move and he had a gap in the front. He was self-conscious about his teeth and found himself smiling through closed lips and thinking about how he looked. He had an art opening coming up in New York City and he wanted to be free to smile and not be thinking about his appearance. His wife was a patient at A Perfect Smile and she suggested he come in to speak with Dr. Nelson. Charlie was thinking that he might just get caps, but his wife did not think that was the way to go.

Charlie says that he wanted to regain his youthful smile, so he met with Dr. Nelson and Lisa and they created a mock up that looked great. He then met with Dany for financial counseling to cover the cost and says that experience was terrific.

The new smile has given him confidence and raised his self-esteem and Charlie feels wonderful. He was already taking care of himself by going to the gym, so he thought “Why not invest in my dental care too”? He says it’s the same kind of thing. According to Charlie, it’s easier to take care of his basic hygiene and flossing is easier with his restored teeth. “When you lose it (your smile), you lose something you never get back.” Charlie ponders that we buy nice clothing, good shoes, and go on comfy vacations, so why not also invest in a nice smile? He said, “In this generation, men should pay attention to this kind of thing.” Check out Charlie’s fantastic art here.

Your Chance to Win this Fall!

back to school BLOG 2014

Fall weather evokes mixed feeling for folks. Some panic because summer is over and the “real world” comes crashing back in, demanding tighter schedules, fewer picnics, bike rides, and trips to the beach. Others rejoice at the arrival of the season and fall into deeper slumbers with the cooler nights and changing colors of the leaves.

For students and educators, fall is a time to settle back into a routine, and to purchase new school supplies and knee socks. At A Perfect Smile we believe in a routine of regular brushing, flossing, and hygiene appointments. By maintaining good oral health, we can prevent problems from creeping up and deter the need for procedures and possible health issues that occur when we don’t take care of our teeth.

This month we are offering patients a chance to win either a take home whitening kit or an electric toothbrush. Just let us know one memory from your time in school (or something that you currently enjoy about school if you are attending now). We’ll add it to our memory tree in the office.

We hope to hear from you before Sept 30; we’ll be drawing for a winner on Oct 1! Happy Brushing!
